Join us for 75th anniversary celebration
It is with great pride that we invite you to join us as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC). This organization was born 75 years ago this month – at a meeting in Carrington of the first five electric cooperatives established in North Dakota. They were eager to have a strong, unified state organization that would help each cooperative – and more which would follow – serve members overjoyed with the prospect of receiving electric power for their farms and homes.
In this issue of North Dakota Living, please read about the proud history of NDAREC and our member cooperatives. You will see we have remained true to the roots of cooperation, as, together, we have secured the power we need, and brought a better quality of life across our state.
It is fitting the theme we have chosen for this 75th anniversary is “Grounded Through the Roots of Cooperation.”
To emphasize the strong principles and practices that underlie our theme, we have been doing some tree planting recently. NDAREC member cooperatives, cooperative neighbors in Montana, and NDAREC colleagues are planting trees in our local communities. Through the planting of these new trees, during this 75th anniversary celebration, we are symbolically rededicating ourselves to our legacy of being firmly rooted in our communities. The 75th anniversary of NDAREC signifies strength, growth and cooperation among many people and organizations, over many generations. These new trees will serve as reminders of these qualities.
The story of 75 years of success for NDAREC is best understood though the commitment that cooperatives have to their member-owners. It is a shared commitment to reliable, affordable supplies of power; to a skilled, professional, accountable workforce; and to heroic dedication to keeping power flowing to members, often overcoming harsh weather challenges.
In the coming months, we’ll continue to communicate about the significance of this 75th anniversary of NDAREC. A look back at what we’ve accomplished together will be based on the helpful adage that “You don’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been.” While we want you to join us in appreciating a proud past, we want even more for you to join us in moving together to greater prosperity and an even better quality of life for our communities.
With this 75th anniversary of NDAREC, strong, enduring roots are being appreciated. In addition, together, we will enjoy our new trees taking root, and be reminded of what they represent: our hope that a new era of cooperation and a vibrant way of life will flourish, as well.
